SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Junior Soma Somody and senior Mo Elsayed of the Long Island University men's fencing team both reached the semifinals of the NCAA Men's Fencing Championship in men's epee on Sunday, but fell in their semifinal bouts.
Somody, the No. 3 seed in Sunday's semifinal, fell 15-10 to Notre Dame's Kruz Schembri. Elsayed, the top-seeded fencer, fell 15-7 to North Carolina's Youssef Shamel 15-7 in his semifinal bout.
Elsayed entered the semifinals after posting a 17-6 record in pool competition, leading the competition with a plus-43 indicator (102-59). Somody also recorded a 17-6 record in pool play, finishing third with a plus-20 indicator (100-80).
LIU senior Andrew Gefell also reached NCAA competition in men's saber, finishing pool play ranked 22nd with a 6-23 record.
