Blank Slate! Men's Soccer Posts Fifth Straight Shutout Win, Emil Goal Streak at Seven

EASTON, Mass. — The LIU men's soccer team offered a rude welcome to NEC newcomer Stonehill on Sunday.

The Sharks blanked the host Skyhawks, 4-0, to increase their winning streak to seven straight matches.

LIU has won five straight matches via shutout — the longest such streak for the program since posting six straight shutout victories during the 1988 season.

"We're just tackling one game and one opponent at a time," head coach Michael Mordocco said. "We don't look ahead, and our staff does their best job to prepare the group each week to paint a good picture of our opponents."

Striker Emil Jaaskelainen, a Mac Hermann Trophy candidate, has been a major driver of the success.

Jaaskelainen scored the opening two goals on Sunday, both early in the second half, to increase his goal-scoring streak to seven straight matches. It marks the longest goal-scoring streak in Division I this season.

"We have five regular season games left before the playoffs," Mordocco said. "The games will be getting tougher and we need to be better for 90 minutes."

Joe Cerrato and Robert Winkler also found the back of the net in the second half for the Sharks. Cerrato tallied the first goal of his collegiate career.

Goalkeeper Gianluca Cersosimo made four saves. He improved to 6-0 with five shutouts in six matches since entering starting lineup.

LIU (9-2 overall) sits atop the NEC at 3-0 in conference play. The Sharks return to action next Sunday at Howard.
