TROY, N.Y. — Goaltender
Vinnie Purpura had an exceptional game for the LIU men's hockey team, making 27 saves.
However, a fluky goal with 10 minutes remaining in the third period proved the lone score as the Sharks fell to host RPI, 1-0, on Friday night.
RPI's Lauri Sertti was credited with the goal, which went into the air and landed behind Purpura before finding its way into the goal.
Purpura, a senior from Lemont, Ill., nonetheless owns a .946 save percentage this season.
LIU went 0-for-5 on the power play, including a brief 6-on-4 advantage in the final minute with Purpura pulled for an extra skater.
The Sharks (1-2-1) have made a habit of playing tight games against programs with rich histories. They already have taken Northeastern and Quinnipiac to overtime this young season, tying the latter game, in addition to Friday night's one-goal loss at RPI.
LIU returns to action next weekend with a pair of games at Michigan State.
