BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker at home Sunday afternoon in the rain. The Sharks hosted local rival Manhattan, and after taking a lead in the second half, saw the visiting Jaspers score twice in the last ten minutes to take the 2-1 victory.
With the loss, LIU moves to 0-3-1, while Manhattan improves to 2-1 on the season.
The first half of the game was scoreless, with only a couple of registered shots on net between the two squads. But in the second half, the scoring got started. LIU got on the board in the 68th minute, when
Kendra Oldroyd scored off a corner kick from
Mackenzie Morano. Oldroyd headed the ball over the Manhattan keeper, putting LIU up, 1-0.
But in the 80th minute, Manhattan tied it up on a ball that bounced off the cross bar and directly down. The ref signaled the goal, and the game was tied, 1-1. The Jaspers rode that momentum, as both teams increased pressure as the clock wound down. And in the 87th minute, they converted. A shot from 18 yards out went into the top right corner, and the visitors had a 2-1 lead.
Though LIU would keep the pressure on, there was not enough time to return the favor, and the Jaspers took the win.
Up next, the Sharks have a 14 day break before they open Northeast Conference action, hosting St. Francis Brooklyn, Sunday, September 19 at 11 a.m.
