BURLINGTON, VT. - The LIU women's soccer team took a tough opponent to overtime for the second-straight game Thursday, as the Sharks faced off against the University of Vermont on the road. This time, the host Catamount managed to score the game-winning goal 90 seconds in to the second overtime period, taking the win, 2-1.
Vermont took the lead early in the game, scoring on a corner in the first four minutes. But LIU's defense locked it down, and the home team would score again in regulation. The two teams would continue to battle, as UVM put the pressure on, out-shooting LIU 26-4. Shark keeper
Kayla DeTreux made nine saves to keep her team in the game.
It was
Kendra Oldroyd who would tie the game up in the second half. The senior scored in the 71st minute on a pass from
Mackenzie Morano to knot the game up, 1-1, eventually forcing it to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the two teams went to the second 10-minute span, and that's where Vermont finally cashed in. The home team scored just over 90 seconds into the action, ending the game after 101 minutes, 2-1.
With the loss, the Sharks move to 0-2-1. Up next, LIU host Manhattan, Sunday, September 5 at 1 p.m.
