SHARKS WIN! Volleyball Caps Duke Invitational with 3-0 Win over NCCU

DURHAM, N.C. –  The LIU women's volleyball team capped the weekend with a win Saturday, as the Sharks finished out the Duke Invitational beating North Carolina Central 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19).

SHARK BITES
  • After NCCU scored the first point of the match, the Sharks opened up with a 5-0 run that gave them the lead. The Sharks would widen that lead to as many as seven points, 18-11, and held on to that lead for the whole set, taking a 25-19 win.
  • LIU also jumped out to an early lead in set two, going up 7-1. A 5-0 run later in the set widened the gap to 20-8. A 5-0 run by the Eagles made it closer, but the Sharks had the dominant advantage, and an NCCU error ended the set, 25-17, giving LIU the 2-0 match lead.
  • NCCU came out fighting in set three, and led, 8-6, eventually widening that lead to 13-8. But a kill from Barbora Hoskova sparked a run for the Sharks, and six unanswered points gave LIU the 14-13 lead. The two teams continued to battle, until LIU held a small lead, 19-18. LIU would score five straight points to earn match point, and after one kill from NCCU, ended it on a block from freshmen Celine Mukura and Rumur Rouille, clinching the 25-19 set win, and the 3-0 match victory.
  • Jovana Stekovic finished the match with 16 kills and nine digs. Mukura chipped in eight kills and three blocks, while Rouille had four blocks.
  • Setters Ainsley Malis and Allie Merz had 22 and 13 assists respectively, while Anastasia Scott led the defense with 16 digs.
  • Stekovic and Scott were both named to the All-Tournament team for their play over the weekend.
  • Up next, the Sharks open Northeast Conference action on the road, taking on FDU Friday, September 24 at 7, before heading to Altoona to take on Saint Francis U., Saturday, September 25 at 5 p.m.
