TEANECK, N.J. – The LIU baseball team snagged an important Northeast Conference win on the road Friday, beating Fairleigh Dickinson, 7-5. The Sharks improved to 16-12 overall, and 14-10 in league action.
LIU got on the board first, scoring a run in the first inning.
Anthony Warneke had a one-out single and stole second. With two outs,
Christopher Wasson doubled to left center field, bringing him home and putting LIU up, 1-0.
The Knights would hit a single home run in the bottom of the frame to tie it up, 1-1, and went up 3-1 in the second, on a two run home run over the center field fence. The home team added a run in the fourth on an RBI ground out to take a 4-1 lead.
But the Sharks made up the difference in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs to vault into the lead. Senior
Andy Camilo led off, and was hit by a pitch with a full count.
Dawson Degnan singled, and
Davyn Adamscheck walked to load the bases. Two runs would score on a single through the right side by
Cade Biddle. An RBI groundout would score one more, and the game was tied, 4-4.
EJ Exposito singled to center field to score the go-ahead run, but then an FDU error extended the inning. And
Giovanni Ciaccio took advantage, singling up the middle to bring two more runs home. LIU came out of the inning with a 7-4 advantage.
FDU would add a run in the sixth, but LIU's relievers came in clutch.
Nick Torres and
Salvatore Ferro both pitched scoreless innings in relief, with two strikeouts each, and
Rob Griswold got the save, pitching a scoreless ninth to clinch the win for LIU.
Joshua Loeschorn got the win, pitching 6.0 innings and striking out eight. The two teams face off again Saturday at 1 p.m.
