Mark Sets New Saves Record in Men’s Lacrosse Battle With Bryant

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore goalkeeper Will Mark set a new program record with 30 saves Tuesday in the LIU men's lacrosse regular season finale, but it was not enough to hold off Bryant, as the Bulldogs fired off 78 shots en route to a 20-17 win over the Sharks.

Mark, who is second in the nation in saves per game, has reset his own program record three times this season. His 30 saves today also marks the highest single-game total in Division I competition this spring.

With the loss, LIU has moved to 6-4 on the season, and 5-3 in the Northeast Conference. The Sharks, having already cliched a spot in the NEC tournament, will wait to find out their seedings as the regular season wraps up this Friday.

Blake Behlen and Nick Grassa led scoring for the Sharks with four goals each.

LIU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first period, with two goals from Alex Russell, and one from Matt Riveira, Behlen and Jake Gillis.

Dylan Villari and Will Snelders added goals in the second period, along with Jake Murphy, but the Bulldogs would score the last four goals of the half, closing the lead to 9-8 at the break.

The Bulldogs kept momentum rolling in the third period, scoring six of the first seven goals of the half in the first six minutes to go up, 14-10.

Back-to-back goals from Bryant would give them a five-goal lead twice, at 16-11 and 18-13. But midway through the fourth, Behlen, LaCalandra and Russell would score three unanswered goals that close the lead to 18-16.

Bryant was able to score two quick goals in the final two minutes, however, and despite Nick Grassa's goal with 54 seconds left, the Bulldogs took the win, 20-17.

Up next for the Sharks is the NEC semifinals, Wednesday, May 5. Time, location and opponent to be determined.
