Men’s Lacrosse Tussles with Top-Seeded St. Joe’s in NEC Semis

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The LIU men's lacrosse team saw their 2021 season come to a close Wednesday afternoon, as the No.4 seeded Sharks fell to No. 1 seed Saint Joseph's University in the Northeast Conference semifinals, 19-11.

The Sharks got on the board first with a goal from Mark Regan, but the Hawks would rattle off two quick goals to take the lead, and added a third before LIU would score again. Blake Behlen would score just before the five-minute mark, an unassisted goal that would close the lead to 3-2.

LIU kept it close from there. Dylan Villari added a goal in the first period, and the Sharks trailed 5-3 after one. In the second period, the Sharks started to ramp it up. Sean Boll would score off a pass from Jake Gillis, and then LIU scored back-to-back goals to tie it up. Villari would score his second, and then Will Snedlers scored a man up goal to tie it up, 6-6.

But in the last two minutes of the first half, the Hawks would score four straight, leading at the break, 10-6. The home team added two more at the beginning of the third period to widen the lead to 12-6. Snelders would score the next two for LIU, and Richie LaCalandra added one, to cut it to 14-9. Villari and Snelders would both score again in the fourth, but St. Joe's would end the game with three straight goals, clinching the win, 19-11.

With the loss, LIU finishes the year 6-5 overall, and 5-3 in the NEC.
