BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women's lacrosse team dropped its first game at home this season, falling to Wagner, 13-9 Wednesday. The game was delayed in the second half for over an hour due to lightning, slowing the Sharks' momentum. With the loss, LIU moves to 9-3 on the season, and 7-3 in the NEC.
Wagner jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but LIU would battle back. Goals from
Whitney Moran,
Amanda Masullo and
Bianca Santucci would close the lead to 5-4 with 5 minutes left in the first half. Wagner scored once more, going into the break with a 6-4 advantage.
The Seahawks opened the second half scoring back-to-back goals, but senior
Sara Stephens kept the Sharks in it, scoring a goal while LIU was man down. Wagner again scored two straight, widening the lead to 10-5. But then, with 16 minutes left, the Sharks started to up the pressure. Moran would score back-to-back goals in less than 30 seconds, and a minute later,
Rachel Masullo added another. Senior
Paige Sherlock would add her second of the game at 12:39, and LIU was within two, 11-9.
A minute later, lightning showed up on the radar, forcing fans and both teams to evacuate the field. The game was paused for over an hour, resuming shortly after 4 p.m.
And the Seahawks took quick control oof the game, scoring just 20 seconds into the resumption of play. In the end, the visiting team took the win, 13-9.
Junior
Hailey Duchnowski had eight saves in net for LIU.
Whitney Moran's hat trick led the Sharks on the offensive end.
