BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women's soccer team played 110 minutes of soccer at home on a chilly Friday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to determine a winner, as Sacred Heart and the Sharks finished tied, 1-1. With the tie, LIU moves to 3-0-1 in Northeast Conference play, while SHU is now 2-4-1.
In a rare occurrence, both team's goals were scored on penalty kicks. Sacred Heart got on the board first on a foul in the box 14 minutes into play. Michell Clarkin would make the penalty kick, and the Pioneers led, 1-0.
But just about 10 minutes later, the Sharks got a call of their own in the box.
Hikari Yamada would take the kick for the Sharks, and got it past the SHU keeper to tie it up, 1-1.
From there, however, neither team would score again. Sacred Heart outshot LIU, 13-8, and also had a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks, but couldn't get on net, and the game would end after two overtime periods, tied 1-1.
Up next, the Sharks will head across the Hudson to take on Fairleigh Dickinson, Tuesday, April 6.
