LORETTO, Pa. – The LIU women's lacrosse team hung in through a late rally to beat Saint Francis U. on the road Saturday afternoon, 13-12. With the win, the Sharks move to 9-2 overall, and 7-2 in the Northeast Conference.
SFU jumped out to a 3-0 lead Saturday, scoring quickly in the first four minutes oof the game, but the Sharks would get on the board five minutes in.
Whitney Moran would score an unassisted goal, followed by goals from seniors
Paige Sherlock and
Amanda Masullo that tied it up, 3-3. For the rest of the half, the Red Flash and the Sharks would trade goals, and went into the halftime break, 6-6.
LIU started to go on a scoring spree to start the second half. Sherlock would score, and Moran added back-to-back goals in the first four minutes, giving LIU a 9-6 lead. Freshman
Jen Gaffney would add two straight goals, and senior
Elise Person scored an unassisted goal, giving LIU a 12-8 lead.
The Sharks needed the buffer. In the final 12 minutes, the home team went on a run, scoring three straight goals and closing the gap to 12-11. Sherlock would score once more with two and a half minutes left to widen the buffer to 13-11, and her goal would end up being the difference in the game. SFU would score a goal as the clock ran down, giving LIU a one goal win, 13-12.
