STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU softball team improved to 15-3 on the season Tuesday, taking two games from Wagner on the road. In the first game of the day, the Sharks run-ruled the Seahawks, beating them 12-3 in six innings. Game two went the other way, as the two teams went to extra innings, before the Sharks won in the eighth, 4-3.
GAME ONE
- Wagner got on the board first Tuesday afternoon, with a solo home run in the bottom of the second that put the home team up, 1-0.
- The Sharks would get on the board in the top of the third. Senior Patricia Griffin led off with a double, and Camryn Lyman followed with a single. Ciara Granado would bring them both home with a double, and she came home on the next at bat, when Alina Castillo had a double to make it 3-1. She'd come home on an RBI single from Samantha Garcia, and LIU led, 4-1.
- In the top of the fourth, with Griffin and Lyman on base, Granado would double again, give LIU a 6-1 lead. And again, Garcia would add an RBI single that made it 7-1 Sharks.
- LIU broke the game open in the top of the sixth. A sacrifice fly for Maya Avila scored the first run, and then senior Ryleigh Bermea homered over the right field fence to bring three more runs home, and LIU led, 11-1. Lyman capped the inning with an RBI single, and LIU came out of the inning with a 12-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the frame, Wagner would score two runs, but it wasn't enough to nullify the run rule, and LIU took the win, 12-3.
- Senior Tallie Woodson had the win on the mound, moving to 7-1 on the season.
GAME TWO
- In the second game, after Wagner went up early, LIU took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. Lyman had an RBI walk, and Castillo brought another run home with a single to center field. Lyman would then score on a wild pitch, and LIU led, 3-1.
- Wagner would add a run in the bottom of the frame, and tied it up, 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. Neither team would score again, and the squads went to extra innings.
- The Sharks would score again in the top of the eighth frame. Senior Kiana Cisneros led off with a double, and freshman Dallas Andrews reached on an error. A bunt from senior Katie Hinkle loaded the bases. Sophomore Maya Avila brought home the winning run with an RBI single to center field that put the Sharks up, 4-3.
- In the bottom of the frame, the Seahawks would get one runner in scoring position, but pitcher Victoria Lowe got the last two batters to strike out, clinching the win for LIU. Lowe got the win to move to 5-1 on the mound this season. She pitched 4.1 innings, giving up no runs and allowing just three hits, while striking out four.
