STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU softball team won their eighth and ninth straight games Wednesday, sweeping Wagner in both games to move to 17-3 in the Northeast Conference. The Sharks run-ruled the Seahawks in game one, 12-5 in five innings, before beating them 4-3 in game two.
GAME ONE
- The Sharks got on the board in the top of the first with some help from Wagner errors. Camryn Lyman would score on a passed ball, and Kiana Cisneros brought an unearned run in with an RBI single to center field, putting the Sharks up, 2-0
- Senior Patricia Griffin would bring another run home in the top of the second with her RBI single.
- The Sharks added three more in the top of the third, with back-to-back singles for Ciara Granado and Alina Castillo. Cisneros brought them both home when she hit a double down the left field line. And she would score on a wild pitch, to make it 6-0.
- After Wagner scored two runs in the bottom of the third, LIU would add four more in the top of the fourth. Granado had an RBI single, Castillo had a sac fly, and senior Ryleigh Bermea had a single that would score two more runs, putting the Sharks up, 10-2.
- LIU would add two more in the top of the fifth. Lyman had a triple down the right field line that would score one, and she scored on Granado's RBI single, and the Sharks led, 12-2.
- In the bottom of the frame, senior Tallie Woodson walked one, but was able to retire the three needed to clinch the 12-2 complete game win. She held the Seahawks to just four hits and no earned runs, striking out two, and improving to 8-1 on the season.
GAME TWO
- The second game proved to be more of a battle. LIU would get on the board in the top of the first. Griffin led off with a single, and came home on a double from Lyman, to make it 1-0.
- The Sharks wouldn't score again until the top of the fourth. Again, Lyman had a two RBI triple, and she came home off an RBI single from Granado, and it was 4-0 LIU.
- Wagner would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but after pitcher Victoria Lowe came in with one out and two runners on, she got two straight pop ups to escape the inning with the Sharks still up.
- She would finish the final 2.2 innings with no runs scored, earning her first save of the season. Senior Haley Irvis (3-0) got the win, striking out four while holding Wagner to just three hits.
