STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU field hockey team notched another Northeast Conference win Thursday, coming from behind to beat Wagner on the road, 2-1. With the win, the Sharks improve to 2-1 in NEC action.
The win was a dramatic one for LIU, following an overtime win over Fairfield last week. Thursday, the Seahawks got out in front early. The home team would score on a penalty corner just over five minutes into the game, going up, 1-0.
The Sharks kept the pressure on, registering more shots on goal than Wagner in the game (12-8), but wouldn't get on the board until the 3rd period. The Sharks would score with three minutes left in the period, when
Sol Espona scored her second goal of the season, off a pass from
Emilce Paez, to tie it up, 1-1.
LIU would score the go-ahead goal in the fourth period. Four minutes into play, the Sharks had the offensive edge, taking a shot that was blocked, and getting back-to-back penalty corners. LIU would score on the second, when
Sammy Bell got her first goal of the season, with an assist from
Michaela Zabicki.
Up 2-1, the Sharks withheld pressure from the Seahawks as time ran down. Keeper
Rachel Vellis would make a save on a penalty corner, and the defense would keep her from seeing another shot for the rest of the game, and LIU clinched the 2-1 win.
Up next, the Sharks take on Sacred Heart on the road, Monday, April 5.
