Baseball Beats Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-2

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU baseball team had a big win at home Thursday afternoon, beating FDU, 3-2. The Sharks staved off a late rally by the nights to take the win, and improve to 4-3 in the Northeast Conference.

LIU went up early. Senior Anthony Warneke had a lead-off single, and advanced to second on a throwing error for FDU. Up next, EJ Exposito had a single to left field that would bring the speedy Warneke home, and LIU led, 1-0.

FDU would tie the game up in the top of the third.  Two walks put runners on, and a sac bunt and a sac fly would score the run, 1-1.

LIU wouldn't get the go-ahead until the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Colin Adams got the RBI walk to make it 2-1, but LIU would strand the other three runners, taking a one-run lead into the eighth.

The Sharks added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Warneke would walk with one out, and stole second, this time scoring on Davyn Adamscheck's single down the left field line, to make it 3-1.

The Knights would add a run in the top of the ninth with two outs, but reliever Rob Griswold would get the last ground out, clinching the 3-2 victory for the home team.

Senior Jackson Svete (1-1) got his first win of the season, as he pitched 7.1 innings on the mound, giving up just one hit on the day, and striking out three. Junior Salvatore Ferro came in to face two batters, getting one strikeout, and senior Rob Griswold notched his third save of the season, pitching 1.1 innings of relief.

Up next, the two teams resume the series, Friday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
