SYOSSET, N.Y. – The LIU women's tennis team won its season opener with relative ease Saturday night, beating Northeast Conference foe Wagner, 6-1. The Sharks won the doubles point and five of the six singles matches to start the year 1-0.
 
In doubles, the LIU duo of Elinor Storkaas and Bianca Compuesto had the first LIU win of the day, beating their opponents in the No. 3 spot, 6-1. Wagner would tie it up with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles spot, but LIU clinched the doubles point, with Victoria Erechtchenko and Jasmine Maduel winning 6-4 in the No. 2 slot.
 
In singles, Valentina Dancenco gave the Sharks a 2-0 win, when she beat her opponent at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1. Compuesto made it 3-0 when she beat Allegra D'Alessandro at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1. And Kuzina clinched the decisive fourth point when she beat Sam Lugtu at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1. 3. Erechtchenko made it 5-0 when she won in the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-2, and Kate Jorjoliani had LIU's sixth point, with her win over Mia Groetsch at No. 6, 6-3, 6-1.
 
Wagner's lone singles point came in the No. 4 spot, where Storkaas was facing Gabi Perraudin, and fored a tiebreaker in the second set, and then dropped the third set tiebreaker by the smallest of margins, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 11-9.
