Softball Takes Two From FDU

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU softball team won both games of its doubleheader at home Saturday afternoon, beating Fairleigh Dickinson to improve to 4-2 in the Northeast Conference. The Sharks run-ruled the Knights in game one, winning 10-2 in five innings, before taking the second game, 6-2.

SHARK BITES – GAME ONE
  • Senior Tallie Woodson got the start on the mound, and shut down FDU for the three innings, holding the Knights hitless.
  • LIU hopped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, senior Alina Castillo had a single down the left field line that would score one. And senior Kiana Cisneros had a sac fly in the next at bad to score one more.
  • The Sharks added three runs in the bottom of the second. After walks for Ryleigh Berma and Patricia Griffin, junior Camryn Lyman tripled to left center field, bringing home both runners, and putting LIU up, 4-0. A sac fly brought her home two batters later, and the Sharks led, 5-0 after two.
  • A two-run home run by Ciara Granado in the bottom of the fourth inning made it 7-0, and freshman Emily Money scored on a wild pitch later that inning to make it 8-0. The ninth run of the day scored on an RBI walk for Bermea.
  • FDU got on the board in the top of the fifth, scoring two, but the Sharks would end the game in the bottom of the inning. FDU loaded the bases on three straight walks, including one hit by pitch, and sophomore Alexis Toledo would end the game on a walk-off, scoring from third on a wild pitch, 10-2.
  • Woodson got the win on the mound (2-1), pitching 5.0 innings. She gave up just four hits and one earned run, while striking out six of the 20 batters she faced.

SHARK BITES – GAME TWO
  • The Sharks scored first in game two, getting two in the bottom of the first. Griffin would score on a wild pitch, and an RBI single from Castillo scored one more.
  • LIU added two more in the bottom of the second, on a hit and two FDU fielding errors, to make it 4-0.
  • In the fourth, senior Katie Hinkle used her speed to score the fifth run of the game. She led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She would come home on an RBI groundout by Lyman to make it 5-0.
  • A home run by FDU scored two for the Knights in the top of the sixth, but senior Haley Irvis would get the last two outs, including one strikeout swinging, to end FDU's threat.
  • The Sharks added a run in the bottom of the sixth, when an RBI single from Griffin brought home freshman Alyssa Okada.
  • Junior Victoria Lowe came in to relieve Irvis in the seventh, and did her job well. She needed just 10 pitches to retire the side, and the Sharks won the game, 6-2.
  • Irvis (1-0) got the win on the mound, with six strike outs, and just three hits in the 6.0 innings pitched.

Up next, the Sharks continue the series with FDU. The double header originally scheduled for Sunday, March 28 has been moved to Wednesday, March 31 due to inclement weather. First pitch for those games is 1 p.m.
