Softball Sweeps FDU in Midweek Doubleheader

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU softball team swept Fairleigh Dickinson at home Wednesday afternoon, in a midweek double header that had been rescheduled from Sunday. The Sharks won game one, 11-5, and game two 4-3.

SHARK BITES – GAME ONE
  • The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on two wild pitches and an error. But the Sharks bounced back almost right away, when junior Samantha Garcia hit a two-run bomb in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2.
  • In the second, a triple by senior Katie Hinkle put LIU on top. 4-3, and an RBI single by senior Patricia Griffin made it 5-3 for the Sharks.
  • LIU would add three more runs in the bottom of the third. Griffin would single with the bases loaded to bring one run home, and senior Ciara Granado had a long single to right center field scored two more, and LIU led, 8-3.
  • FDU added two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Sharks answered again in the bottom of the frame, and again, it was a two-run homer. This time, it was junior Angelina Reno with the home run over the left center fence, and LIU's lead increased to 10-5.
  • The Sharks added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, on an RBI single for Hinkle, and LIU took the 11-5 win.
  • Senior Victoria Lowe (2-1) had the win on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings. Junior Zoe Estoppey pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Sharks.

SHARK BITES – GAME TWO
  • Speedy baserunning got the Sharks on the board in game two. Camryn Lyman walked with one out, and then stole second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, and would score on a wild pitch to put LIU up, 1-0.
  • The same was true in the bottom of the third. Griffin led off and singled, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Granado advanced her with a groundout, and when pinch runner Kristen Blanchard went to steal second, Griffin would come home on the throw, putting LIU up, 2-0. And Alina Castillo would bring Blanchard home with a single to left field, increasing LIU's lead to 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, a bunt single by Lyman would score another run, and the Sharks were up, 4-0 when the rain started.
  • Play got sloppy in the later innings, with intermittent rain starting in the fourth. FDU would capitalize, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.
  • Senior Tallie Woodson came in, and was sharp to end the game, retiring three straight in the sixth, and then four in the seventh to clinch the win for the Sharks, 4-3, and earn her first save of the season. Freshman starter Kira Buckner (1-0) had the win on the mound.
  • Up next, LIU travels south to take on Mount St. Mary's, Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.
