EMMITSBURG, Md. – The LIU softball team increased its win streak to eight straight Friday, beating Mount St. Mary's 5-1 and 8-5 in the first double header of the weekend. The Sharks had three home runs on the day, as they improve to 8-2 in Northeast Conference play.
GAME ONE
- The Sharks got on the board in the top of the third. With one out and the bases loaded, LIU would capitalize on Mount errors to score two runs. A sac fly by Ciara Granado brought home the third run, and senior Alina Castillo had an RBI single to score the fourth run of the day.
- Granado would add the fifth run in the top of the fifth inning. The senior hit a home run over the left field fence to make it 5-0. It's her third home run of the season.
- Senior Tallie Woodson got her third win of the season on the mound, pitching the complete game. She struck out five while allowing just one run.
GAME TWO
- In the second game, Mount jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
- But the Sharks would answer in the next frame. Granado would bring junior Camryn Lyman home on an RBI double. And two batters later, senior Alina Castillo would clear the bases, with a three-run homer to center field, putting LIU up, 4-3.
- In the top of the fifth, another three run home run, this time by senior Kiana Cisneros, would widen LIU's lead to 7-3.
- Mount added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but LIU would keep the game out of reach, adding another run in the sixth. Senior Katie Hinkle's double became a run when Lyman brought her home on an RBI single to make it 8-5.
- Victoria Lowe (3-1) got the win on the mound, while Zoe Estoppey earned her first save oof the season.
The two teams resume the series with another double header, Saturday, April 3.
