EMMITSBURG, Md. – The LIU softball team split with Mount St. Mary's Saturday, losing the first game, 9-1 in five innings, before rallying to beat the Mountaineers, 7-5 in game two. The loss snapped an eight game winning streak for the Sharks, but with the win, they finish the day with a 9-3 record in Northeast Conference action.
GAME ONE
In the first game of Saturday's action, the Sharks got on the board first, scoring on a throwing error in the top of the third. But Mount would answer in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs to take the lead.
The Mountaineers made their offensive push in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to take a 6-1 lead. The home team added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, going up, 9-1., and winning the game in five innings on a walk-off RBI triple.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day took a different note. In game one, LIU only got four hits on the board. In game two, the Sharks opened with not just a hit, but a bomb. Senior
Patricia Griffin led off with a homer to right center field, putting LIU up early, 1-0.
In the second inning, Griffin brought another run home for the Sharks. After
Angelina Reno led off with a single, and she was advanced by a sac bunt from
Ryleigh Bermea, Griffin had an RBI single to right field to bring her home and make it 2-0 LIU.
Mount would get on the board in the bottom of the second, and tied it up with another run in the bottom of the fifth. The home team then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating three runs with a home run to left field to go up, 5-2.
But the Sharks managed a late rally in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs with two outs already on the board. An RBI walk for Reno would score the first run with the bases loaded, but then Bermea cleared those bases, hitting a triple deep to center field that would score three runs, and put LIU up, 7-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior pitcher
Tallie Woodson got the outs, and clinched the win for LIU. Woodson earned her fourth win of the season on the mound, pitching the complete seven innings.
Up next, the Sharks host Merrimack for a four game series, Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11.
