EMMITSBURG, Md. – The LIU baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth at a late attempt to comeback, but it wouldn't be enough, as the Sharks fell to Mount St. Mary's, 9-6. Senior
Andy Camilo had three RBI to lead LIU at the plate.
The Sharks (4-1, 2-1 NEC) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring two unearned runs. The first came when
Giovanni Ciaccio, who had a lead-off walk, scored on a Mount error. Camilo brought the next run in with an RBI single, and the Sharks led, 2-0.
Mount got on the board in the bottom of the second, when a double to right field cleared the bases, and the home team led 3-2.
LIU would knot it up in the top of the fourth, when senior
Davyn Adamscheck led off with a double. He advanced on a wild pitch, and came home two batters later on an RBI groundout from sophomore
Carlton Harper, making it 3-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, however, the Mountaineers broke the game open, scoring five runs on three hits and an error, to go up 8-3. The home team added one more run in the bottom of the eighth, increasing the gap to 9-3.
The Sharks mounted a late rally in the top of the ninth. The first three batters of the inning walked, and Ciaccio would bring one home with a sac fly, 9-4. With two outs and another walk to load the bases once more, Camilo singled to center field to bring two more runs in, cutting the gap to 9-6. But the Mount were able to get the third and final out, ending the game with the 9-6 win.
Alec Huertas had the start on the mound, giving up just three hits in 6.0 innings pitched, while striking out seven.
Up next, LIU takes on Merrimack on the road, Friday, March 26 through Sunday, March 28.
