Baseball Meets with Merrimack in Series-Opener

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Long Island University baseball team came up short in its series-opener at Merrimack College, falling to the Warriors by an 11-5 margin on Friday, March 26.

The Sharks compiled 10 hits as a team, eight Sharks recording a hit on the day. Christopher Wasson led the offensive efforts with a 2-for-5 effort, recording a double and a home run while driving in two runs and scoring twice. Andy Camilo also recorded a two-hit day for LIU, finishing 2-for-3.

On the mound, Nick Torres tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief but it wasn't enough as Merrimack scored early and often to take the lead and stay in control much of the afternoon.

LIU took the early lead during the top of the first when EJ Exposito drove in the opening run with a ground out to third base, though the Warriors responded with four runs during the bottom half of the frame. LIU pushed across another run in its next at-bat, but was met once again with a four-run response from Merrimack as the Warriors led 8-2 after two innings.

The Blue and Gold cut it down to a three-run game after a Wasson solo homer during the fourth and a Davyn Adamscheck sacrifice fly during the fifth. It was as close as LIU would come, however, as Merrimack tacked on three more insurance runs during the eighth to take the series-opener, 11-5.

LIU will look to bounce back and take the weekend series when it battles the Warriors for two-games as part of a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The series was originally scheduled to be played on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but due to forecasted inclement weather on Sunday, the final game will be played following the conclusion of the 1:00 game on Saturday.
