STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2021 season Wednesday afternoon, falling on the road to Wagner, 14-3. The Sharks were led by two goals from senior
Paige Sherlock.
Neither team would score for the first part of the first half, despite plenty of shots. The first goal of the game came just over 16 minutes in, when Wagner got on the board, scoring two quick goals in 30 seconds. The Seahawks would add a third goal a minute later to take the 3-0 lead.
The Sharks would get on the board less than a minute later. After an LIU timeout, senior
Rachel Masullo won the draw, and 30 seconds later, Sherlock would score, off a pass from
Jamie Alvino, cutting the lead to 3-1.
Junior
Elise Person would cut it down further, when with nine minutes left, she scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-2.
Wagner would add another goal on a free position shot soon after, and then added four quick goals in the last four minutes of the half, to lead 8-2 at the break.
The second half started on a promising note for the Sharks, as Sherlock would score her second goal of the game two minutes in off a pass from Masullo, making it 8-3. But Wagner's offense would dominate the rest of the game, and the Seahawks would take the 14-3 win.
Keeper
Hailey Duchnowski would make 17 saves in net for the Sharks in the loss. Up next, the Sharks will head north to take on Central Connecticut State, Saturday, March 13.
