BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's lacrosse team opened its 2021 campaign with a 13-4 rout of Central Connecticut State University at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 20.
LIU dominated throughout the entirety of the contest, outshooting the Blue Devils 21-12 while also forcing 19 turnovers and collecting 14 draw controls.
Paige Sherlock a brigade of goal scorers with four goals, while
Amanda Masullo tallied two goals. In all, LIU saw nine players find the back of the net, including the first career goals for
Rachel Weber and
Jen Gaffney.
After a few empty possessions for both sides, Sherlock opened the scoring for LIU just under five minutes into the first half, igniting a 11-0 run to begin the contest for the Sharks. Sherlock and
Amanda Masullo scored twice during the opening 30 minutes and LIU took an 8-0 advantage into halftime. The Blue and Gold tacked on three more unanswered goals to begin the second half before Morgan Sinton scored her first of two goals for Central Connecticut State at the 21:23 mark of the stanza.
Between the pipes,
Hailey Duchnowski was phenomenal for LIU, making eight saves on the day for her first win of the season.
LIU will look to continue its hot start to the season on Saturday, Feb. 27 for a showdown with Sacred Heart University. The opening draw against the Pioneers is slated for 1:00 p.m.
