FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Paige Sherlock scored four goals and
Whitney Moran posted a career-best four points as the Long Island University women's lacrosse team took down Sacred Heart University, 14-9 in its final non-conference tune-up of the season on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Francesca Vasile-Cozzo added six points with two goals and four assists, and
Rachel Masullo found the back of the net three times on the day to lead the offensive efforts for the Sharks.
Catherine Robles and
Madeline Schaefer added three ground balls on the defensive end and
Hailey Duchnowski made seven saves on the afternoon to improve to 2-0 in goal.
Overall, the Sharks held a 36-20 advantage in shot attempts and a 26-16 edge in shots on goal. Masullo collected 12 draw controls to lead LIU to a 21-4 advantage on restarts.
It took just 60 seconds for Moran to find the back of the net, giving LIU the early advantage. Both sides went back and forth over the next 10 minutes before the Sharks rattled off three unanswered goals to jump ahead, 5-2. The Blue and Gold also scored the final three goals of the half to grab an 8-4 lead at the intermission.
Sacred Heart rallied midway through the second half, cutting the LIU deficit to just a single goal with 9:10 to play before LIU scored the final four goals of the contest to earn the 14-9 victory.
The Sharks will take on Sacred Heart once again on Saturday, March 6 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium for their first Northeast Conference matchup of the season.
