LORETTO, Pa. - The LIU men's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking loss on the road at Saint Francis U. Sunday afternoon. The Sharks had battled back to tie the game up 2-2, before the Red Flash scored the game-winning goal with just 84 seconds left to play in the game, taking the win, 3-2. The Red Flash kept postseason hopes alive with the win, moving to 3-4-0 in Northeast Conference action, while the Sharks move to 5-2-0 in the NEC, and 9-4-2 overall.
SFU scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game to go up early on LIU, 2-0. LIU's best chances didn't come until the second half, when
Emil Jaaskelainen would score back-to-back goals to tie up the game. The first goal came in the 53rd minute, cutting the lead to 2-1. And then, Jaaskelainen would find the back of thte net again in the 75th minute, tying the game up, 2-2.
After a double yellow resulted in a red card in the 78th minute, the Sharks were playing a man down for the final minutes of the game. But LIU kept SFU at bay, and it seemed that the game was headed to overtime. But a foul outside of the 18 gave the Red Flash a free kick with 1:24 to play, and the home team took advantage. SFU would score directly on the free kick, giving the Red Flash a 3-2 advantage with just over a minute left to play.
The Sharks couldn't convert in that time, and in the end, Saint Francis U. took the win, 3-2. Up next, LIU travels to Maryland to take on Mount St. Mary's, Sunday, October 31 at 1 p.m.
