NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The LIU football team earned its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, beating Central Connecticut State, 30-13. The win was the first career win for interim head coach
Jonathan Gill, and it was the program's first road win as a Division I program.
CCSU got on the board first with a field goal in the first quarter, but five minutes later, LIU evened the score with a field goal from
Paul Inzerillo, 3-3. CCSU added another field goal in the second to go up, 6-3, but it was the last time the home team would lead.
Less than two minutes later, quarterback
Camden Orth found
Derick Eugene in the end zone for the first touchdown of the day. The 88-yard drive gave the Sharks a 10-6 lead, and LIU never looked back. Inzerillo would score the next six points for the Sharks on field goals in the second and third quarters, to put LIU up, 16-6.
Near the end of the third quarter, Orth found tight end
Owen Glascoe in the endzone for a three-yard touchdown pass that completed a 52 yard drive, putting LIU up, 23-6.
CCSU would score once more, but near the end of the fourth,
Kevin Wilson ran for 23 yards to score, putting LIU on top, 30-13.
SHARK BITES
- Camden Orth was 14-for-26, with 146 passing yards, 52 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
- Shemar Paul had a team-high 71 rushing yards on three attempts, while Jonathan DeBique had 61 rushing yards.
- The Sharks had three receivers split yardage: Tosin Oyekanmi (56 yards), Derick Eugene (34 yards), and Owen Glascoe (28 yards) were the top targets for Orth.
- Rudy Silvera had an interception and 16 yard return on defense. Larry Elder and Qualil Lumpkins led the defense with seven tackles each, and Jaden Dawkins had a quarterback sack for nine yards.
- Junior kicker Paul Inzerillo made three field goals, and was 3-for-3 on PATs.
