FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The LIU field hockey team dropped its Northeast Conference season opener on the road Friday afternoon, falling to Fairfield, 1-0. With the loss, the Sharks move to 2-7 on the season, 0-1 in NEC action.

The Stags scored early in the game, getting a goal in the first four minutes of play to take the 1-0 lead.

But that would be the only time either team would score for the rest of the game. The Sharks kept the pressure on, with five shots to Fairfield's seven, but were not able to convert. Senior goalie Rachel Vellis made fives saves in net for LIU.
