FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Long Island University softball team (2-2) split day two at the Florida Gulf Coast Kickoff Classic, beating Georgetown in the first game of the day, 3-1, before falling to host FGCU in the nightcap, 5-1.
LIU 3, Georgetown 1
In the first game of the day, junior
Victoria Lowe (1-0) pitched a complete game five-hitter, giving up just one run to the Hoyas in seven innings of action, while striking out two.
The Hoyas got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on a sac bunt and a sac fly, to go up, 1-0.
LIU wasn't able to answer until the top of the fifth, but when they did, the Sharks answered big time. Sophomore
Camryn Lyman had a lead-off single to start the inning, and junior
Kiana Cisneros followed with a single of her own. A sac bunt by junior
Alina Castillo moved both runners to scoring position with two outs, and then junior
Ciara Granado brought them both home with her first homer in an LIU uniform. The junior smashed the ball over the left field fence, scoring both runners and putting the Sharks on top, 3-1.
From there, Lowe and the defense did the rest, giving up minimal hits, and dealing with whatever Georgetown threw their way in the final two innings, to take the win over the Hoyas, 3-1.
FGCU 5, LIU 1
In the second game of the day, which was delayed until 9:45 p.m., the Sharks fell to the host Eagles, 5-1.
LIU got on the board in the first inning; senior
Patricia Griffin led off with a single, and Cisneros had a double down the left field line that put her on third. Sophomore catcher
Samantha Garcia had the sac fly to left field that would bring Griffin home, and LIU led, 1-0.
The host Eagles evened the score in the bottom of the fourth, when two errors would score a run for FGCU. Thought LIU would make a play at home a few batters later, another unearned run would score, and the home team took the lead, 2-1.
The Eagles would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking the eventually win over the Sharks, 5-1.
Senior
Tallie Woodson (1-1) had the complete game loss, pitching 6.0 innings, and giving up four earned runs. The senior struck out four in her effort, while walking just one.
The Sharks wrap up play at the FGCU Kickoff Classic Sunday, February 9 taking on the University of Delaware at 11:15 a.m.
