FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Long Island University softball team wrapped up its first tournament of the season Sunday morning, falling to Delaware in five innings at the FGCU Kickoff Classic, 11-2.
The Blue Hens scored early in the game, putting two runs on the board in the first inning, and four in the second. They added two runs in the third, and would score in both the fourth and fifth innings as well.
Sophomore
Kelsey Day was the first Shark to get in scoring position with her double in the bottom of the second, but Delaware's pitcher would retire the next two batters. LIU would get on the board in the bottom of the third frame. Senior
Katie Hinkle led off with a single, and advanced on classmate
Patricia Griffin's single to center field. Both runners advanced on a groundout, and Hinkle would score on another ground out in the next at bat. Junior
Alina Castillo would single with two outs to bring Griffin home, and LIU was on the board, 8-2.
In the top of the fifth, Delaware used a two run homer to go up, 11-2. In the bottom of the fifth, the Sharks got a lead-off single from sophomore
Camryn Lyman, but couldn't bring her home, and the game ended on the run rule.
Sophomore
Elena Valenzuela (1-1) had the loss on the mound.
Up next, the Sharks (2-3) head to Lake Elsinore, California, to take part in the Golden State Classic, February 14 to 16.
