LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – The Long Island University softball team split the first day of the Golden State Classic, in two games that were both shortened to five innings. In the first game of the day, the Sharks fell to San Jose State, 10-2, before beating Army in the second game of the day by the same score, 10-2.
San Jose State 10, LIU 2
In the first game of Friday's action, LIU fell to San Jose State, 10-2. Sophomore
Samantha Garcia had a two-run double to lead LIU on offense.

In the second game of the night, the Sharks reversed the fortune, and won in five innings, beating the Black Knights, 10-2.
The Sharks started right off in top of the first inning. Senior
Patricia Griffin had a lead-off single, and was advanced on a bunt single by sophomore
Camryn Lyman. With one out, sophomore
Samantha Garcia loaded the bases with a single to right field. And in the next at bat, junior
Alina Castillo brought in the first run of the game with an RBI single, and the Sharks were, up, 1-0.
Army answered with an unearned run in the bottom, and the game stayed tied, 1-1 for an inning. But the Sharks went to work in the top of the third, scoring seven runs. Lyman led off with a walk, and junior
Kiana Cisneros singled. Garcia followed that up with an RBI single that made it 2-1 LIU. With one out, freshman
Maya Avila hit a double. One run would score on an error, and Cisneros crossed the plate to make it 4-1 for the Sharks. A walk added junior
Ryleigh Bermea to the bases. Senior
Katie Hinkle would have an RBI single that brought two runs in, and errors helped LIU score two more runs. Lyman would have an RBI single to score another run, putting LIU on top, 8-1.
In the top of the fourth, Castillo made it 9-0 with a leadoff home run. Hinkle would bring in another run with an RBI single later in the inning, and the Sharks were on top, 10-1.
Army would score one run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 10-2, but senior pitcher
Tallie Woodson would retire the side, including a close call at home plate, giving LIU the run-rule win.
Woodson got the win on the mound (2-1), pitching all five innings, holding Army to just one earned run with two strikeouts.
Katie Hinkle went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored offensively, while
Alina Castillo was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Camryn Lyman,
Samantha Garcia and
Kiana Cisneros all had a multi-hit game for the Sharks.
Up next, the Sharks resume play at the Golden State Classic, taking on San Diego and Loyola Marymount in Saturday action.
