BETHPAGE, N.Y.- The Long Island University women's tennis team earned its first dual match victory of the season, sweeping Hofstra, 7-0 on Friday evening.
The Sharks opened up the night with a sweep in doubles to earn the doubles point.
Valentina Dancenco and
Sofiya Kuzina defeated Katherine Kachkarov and Alabina Zagnjor, 6-0. The duo of
Victoria Erechtchenko and
Phoebe Watton clinched the doubles point for LIU, defeating Odessa Stork/Mandisa Walle, 6-3.
Elinor Storkaas and
Bianca Compuesto completed the doubles sweep, beating Jasmine King and April Sanchez, 6-4.
The Sharks did not let up and also swept the Pride in singles. At No. 1 singles,
Valentina Dancenco earned the first team singles point, defeating King, 6-1,6-4.
Victoria Erechtchenko fought off Stork at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4 for the second team point.
Bianca Compuesto clinched the win for the Sharks at No. 4 singles as she defeated Walle, 6-1, 6-4.
Sofiya Kuzina knocked off Kachkarov at No. 2 singles 6-0, 7-6 (3).
Despite being down after the first set,
Elinor Storkaas came back to defeat her opponent 3-6, 7-6(5) 11-9 in the third set tie break. Storkaas rallied back and saved two match points en route to the win.
To wrap up the night,
Kate Jorjoliani won her match 8-6. She played an eight-set pro match since the match was already decided.
The Sharks continue dual match play next week when they head to Albany, N.Y. to take on Siena College on Friday, February 14. Match time at Albany Tri-City Fitness is set for 6:00 p.m.
