Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Ice Hockey Closes out Weekend Series At Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass- Stella Scott scored an early goal for the Sharks, but three unanswered goals from Franklin Pierce proved to be the difference as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team fell to the Ravens, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks did not waste any time as Scott scored her fifth goal of the season in the opening two minutes of the game. Renee Hoffmann and Julia Hoffmann had the assists on Scott's goal.

The Ravens would get the equalizer in the 15th minute of the game. A five-minute major and game misconduct penalty on Scott gave Franklin Pierce a power play. Another Sharks penalty gave the Ravens a 5-on-3 opportunity which they took advantage of, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission.

While killing off the remaining 48 seconds of the penalty to open the second period, Linn Thomsen nearly scored as her shot hit the pipe. Despite some good looks at net, the Sharks were not able to get one passed the Ravens goaltender. McLeod also kept the Ravens off the scoreboard in a scoreless second period to keep the deficit at two heading into the final period.

The Sharks held the Ravens to just four shots in a scoreless third period, and took a game-high nine shots at the goaltender. Eight minutes into the third, Grace Dima had an opportunity but it was saved by the goalie. Dima had another look as she had a one-timer at the slot but it was saved once more.

Saige McKay had another great look for LIU as her shot forced the goaltender to get a hand on the puck to save it from going in.  After a Sharks' timeout, the Ravens just missed the empty net, giving the Sharks another opportunity to battle back. McKay took another shot but was blocked, while Carrigan Umpherville took a shot that missed wide. Molly Meyers had one last opportunity for the Sharks in the final seconds of the game, but her shot was blocked by a Ravens defender.

Mia McLeod finished the game with 32 saves after facing 35 shots. Linn Thomsen and Alva Johnsson both had two blocked shots on the day.

McKay, Dima, Matilda af Bjur, and Abby Latorella each had three shots on target.

The Sharks close out the inaugural regular season on the road next weekend, Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15, when they take the trip to Manchester, N.H. for a New England Women's Hockey Alliance series against Saint Anslem. Puck drop in game one on Friday is slated for 7:00 p.m.
