WINCHENDON, Mass.- For the third straight game, the Long Island University women's ice hockey team scored seven goals, taking down Franklin Pierce, 7-4 in a crucial New England Women's Hockey Alliance victory.
Carrigan Umpherville scored her first career hat trick,
Abby Latorella scored twice, and Megan Bouver finished with five points in the Friday evening win over the Ravens.
Stella Scott broke open a nearly scoreless first period and got the Sharks on the board late in the 17
th minute of the opening stanza.
Morgan Schauer made the initial pass to Bouveur who sent the puck to Scott for the one-time finish at the right post.
After the one goal first period, both teams came out of the intermission shooting, and each scored four times in the second. Latorella started the scoring spree as she collected the puck from Bouveur and backhanded it passed the goalie to the back of the net. Less than a minute later, Franklin Pierce would respond with two quick goals, both coming within 24 seconds of each other to tie the game at two all. The Ravens would take the lead just about halfway through the second, but the Sharks would not let them keep the momentum.
Two minutes later,
Grace Dima cleared the puck down the ice to find an open Umpherville who took it one-on-one with the Ravens' goaltender and sent the puck past her right side, tying the game at three all. Two more minutes passed by before Bouveur took the puck out of the defensive end, shot it, and sent home her own rebound to give the Sharks the lead once more. Umpherville scored her second goal of the game a minute later, extending the lead to two-goals. The Ravens would score one more before the end of the period, but the Sharks held on to a one goal lead.
Latorella would open up the third period with her second goal of the game, as she sent home
Linn Thomsen's initial shot. In the 18
th minute of the third,
Matilda af Bjur won the faceoff and Umpherville brought the puck to the high slot where she sent the puck passed the goaltender for the third time of the night to complete her first career hat trick.
Mia McLeod earned her sixth win of the season in net for the Sharks. The freshman goaltender finished the day with 34 saves. The Sharks' defense killed all six of the Raven's power plays.
Bouvuer finished the day with a career-high four assists and had a plus four. Dima, Thomsen, af Bjur,
Morgan Schauer, and
Alva Johnsson all had an assist on the day. The Sharks finished 1 for 2 on the power play.
The Blue and Gold return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday February 8, to close out the regular season series against the Ravens. Puck drop at Jason Ritchie Arena is set for 4:00 p.m.
