BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Long Island University men's basketball team will welcome two teams in the Steinberg Wellness Center this weekend, with the chance to revenge two of their toughest losses of the season. Thursday, February 6, the Sharks welcome Mount St. Mary's, who beat LIU in double overtime in January, and Saturday, February 8, LIU plays host to league-leading Merrimack, who held the Sharks to their lowest point total in Northeast Conference play just this past weekend.
SHARK BITES
- LIU (10-12, 5-4 NEC) faced off against Mount St. Mary's (9-13, 5-4 NEC) in the conference opener back in early January, and the two teams needed not one, but two extra periods to determine a winner. In the end, the Mountaineers took the win, 82-73. Senior Raiquan Clark led LIU with 25 points in the loss, while the Mount had two players with 20+ point games.
- LIU and Mount have a 50-50 split all time, 31-31. Last year, each team won on their home court to maintain the even split attitude, and the Sharks will be looking to repeat the feat this year, winning in Brooklyn Thursday.
- The Mountaineers have a trio of guards who are driving their offense: sophomore Damian Chong Qui (12.3 ppg), junior Jalen Gibbs (11.9 ppg) and sophomore Vado Morse (11.2 ppg).
- Merrimack (15-8, 9-1 NEC) has a stranglehold on the top spot in the conference, and haven't lost since January 4th. This past Saturday, they beat the Sharks, 70-59, holding LIU to its lowest point total in conference play, and second lowest total all season.
- The Sharks, who normally put up 20-40 three pointers a game, were held to just 13 three-point field goal attempts Saturday, and made only three of those.
- Senior Raiquan Clark led the Sharks with 22 points, going 6-for-10 from the field and 10-for-14 from the free throw line. With his points Saturday, he moved into second place on LIU's all-time career scoring list.
- Junior Ty Flowers had his 11th double double of the season, with 14 points and 13 rebounds. He also had three blocks and three assists.
- Head Coach Derek Kellogg is still just one win away from career victory 200, while senior Julian Batts is 50 points away from the 1,000-point mark.
