ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The LIU men's hockey team improved to 2-1 in their inaugural season, notching a 4-3 win over RIT on the road. The Sharks were led by two goals from senior
Zack Bross, who was playing in his first game for LIU, and the first Division I men's hockey game of his career. The game was a thrilling comeback for LIU. The Sharks went down to the Tigers early, 2-0, before scoring four straight goals to rally and take the win.
RIT would score in the first period, and added another goal three minutes into the second, putting the Sharks in the hole. But just over a minute later, Bross got LIU on the board. A transfer from UMass Boston, Bross had not donned an LIU sweater before Friday night. But cleared to play, he made his impact felt in the second period. Bross scored with an assist from freshman
Brett Humberstone to get LIU on the board, 2-1.
Five minutes later, freshman
Gustav Müller evened it up, 2-2, scoring on a scramble in front of the net. Sophomore
Nolan McElhaney was credited with the assist. And four minutes later, senior
Mitchell Meek got in on the goal action, scoring a long-range goal.
Christian Rajic and
Jack Quinn moved the puck quickly behind the net and up the ice, to a waiting Meek near the blue line. Meek fired a rocket to the top corner of the net, and the Sharks had a 3-2 lead.
Despite RIT's attempts to shift momentum, LIU kept the game rolling into the third period. Bross would make it happen once more. Just 93 seconds into the period, the senior would score on a scramble with the help of Quinn, and LIU had a 4-2 lead.
Bross's goal would end up being the game-winner. The Tigers would spend most of the third period trying to get back in the game, including emptying the net in the last minutes, but to no avail. RIT would score a single goal with eight minutes to play, but senior keeper
Garrett Metcalf and the LIU defense would hold off the home team and clinch the second win of the season, 4-3.
Metcalf was again a stalwart in net for the Sharks, making 33 saves, while the Sharks blocked 17 shots on defense. Senior
Mat Harris led the squad with four stops for LIU.
Up next, the Sharks and the Tigers square up for a rematch, Saturday, December 12 at 5 p.m.
