ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The LIU men's hockey team took on the RIT Tigers in a rematch Saturday night, just 24 hours after meeting the team for the first time in program history. After LIU took the first matchup, 4-3, the Tigers got their revenge in the second game, beating the Sharks, 5-1.
LIU took an early lead in the game, outplaying the Tigers in the first period. The Sharks' lone goal came at the 11-minute mark. Freshman
Jordan Di Cicco took a shot from far out, and senior
Derek Osik got his stick in there to redirect it just past the RIT keeper, and LIU was up, 1-0.
The Sharks stayed in the game through the second period. Though RIT would score three unanswered goals, LIU didn't let the momentum shift totally in favor of the home team. But in the third period, a costly major penalty would force the Sharks to play down for five minutes, and the Tigers capitalized, scoring twice to increase the gap to 5-1.
Goalie
Vincent Purpura had a strong showing later in the game, as he made 21 saves in net for the Sharks.
With the loss, LIU moves to 2-2 on the season. Up next, the Sharks have a two week break for exams and the holidays, and resume game action in a scheduled contest against AIC, December 28.
