SHELTON, Conn.- Five different Sharks scored as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team took down Post University, 7-1, in a New England Women's Hockey Alliance contest on Friday afternoon.
Abby Latorella and
Renee Hoffmann each scored twice, while
Carrigan Umpherville,
Erin Hinch and
Matilda af Bjur all scored once.
Umpherville opened up the scoring with her team-leading 10
th goal of the season in the sixth minute of the first period. Post would take advantage of a power play and tie the game with their lone goal of the day in the 13
th minute of the first. The Sharks had a power-play where they got six shots off but were unable to convert on the player advantage.
The Sharks opened up the second period on the penalty kill, and successfully killed it off to keep the score tied at one-all.
Abby Latorella had a breakaway in the neutral zone and took the puck past the defenders and around the goaltender to break open the tie and give the Sharks the lead, one they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Just over five minutes later Latorella deflected in the rebound off
Alva Johnsson's shot for her second goal in the period. The Eagles tested McLeod in the second, who made 21 saves and did not allow a goal. Post had an opportunity where they took eight shots in a row, all of which were either saved or blocked by a defender to keep the Eagles from scoring.
The Sharks' offense continued to click and scored four more times in the third period. Hoffmann opened up the third period scoring with a short-handed goal just five minutes into the final stanza. She would find the back of the net once again for her second goal in just three minutes. Hinch extended the Sharks' lead in the 16
th minute of the period with her second goal of the season, and af Bjur capped the Sharks scoring for the day a minute later.
Grace Dima,
Megan Bouveur, Johnsson all had two assists to finish the day with two points.
Renee Hoffmann added an assist to her two goals to finish with three points.
Julia Hoffmann also closed out the day with an assist.
McLeod played all 60 minutes in net for the Sharks and finished the day with 36 saves. The Sharks finished the matchup with seven blocked shots, and killed off six of the seven Eagles' power plays.
The Sharks return to Northwell Health Ice Center, tomorrow, Saturday, February 1 to close out the weekend series against Post. Puck drop is slated for 4:15 p.m.
