Women's Hockey Routs Post, 7-1 for Weekend Sweep

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – For the second-consecutive day, the Long Island University women's hockey team showed its offensive prowess against the Post University Eagles, tallying seven goals in an 7-1 rout in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action at Northwell Health Ice Center.

LIU dominated the entire contest, outshooting Post by a 67-39 margin, including a 45-24 edge in shots on goal.

The Blue and Gold jumped out to a lead midway through the first period when freshman Renee Hoffmann scored her seventh goal of the season on assists from classmates Julia Hoffmann and Carrigan Umpherville. LIU tacked on two more goals before the intermission, as freshman Matilda af Bjur and Grace Dima found the back of the net to give the Sharks a 3-0 advantage. The lead stretched to 4-0 early in the second period when Umpherville scored on feed from behind the cage by Renee Hoffmann.

Post responded to Umpherville's goal late in the frame as Sadie Storm ripped home a shot from the right wing on the power-play before LIU's special teams unit stepped up the rest of the way. The Sharks killed off three penalties during the second period as part of a 5-for-6 performance on the day.

The Sharks went out with a bang in their final regular home game of the inaugural season, scoring three more goals during the final stanza. Freshman Alva Johnsson opened a scoring burst for LIU when she potted a cross-ice feed from freshman Abby Latorella. The Sharks tacked on two more goals just 1:40 apart as Umpherville scored her team-leading 12th goal of the year and second goal of the day with 9:54 remaining before freshman Saige McKay netted her third of the year at the 8:14 mark.

Freshman netminder Mia McLeod stopped 23 shots on the day to earn her fourth win of the season. Rookie defenseman Lauren Spino led the Sharks with two blocked shots on the day, while af Bjur won a team-best 14 face-offs.

LIU will close out the regular season with four road contests over the next two weeks, beginning with a two-game set in Winchendon, Mass. when the Sharks battle Franklin Pierce University. LIU and the host Ravens will begin the series on Friday, Feb. 7 with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Jason Ritchie Arena.
