Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Bouveur Scores Power Play Goal in Second Game Against Sacred Heart

SYOSSET, N.Y.- Megan Bouveur scored a power play goal early in the third period, but the Long Island University women's ice hockey team fell to Sacred Heart, 2-1, in a tightly contested New England Women's Hockey Alliance game on Saturday evening.

The Sharks and Pioneers were scoreless after the first period. Alva Johnsson had a great opportunity to get the Sharks on the board but her shot hit off the goaltender and fell right above the net.

After killing off a power play to start the second period, the Pioneers had a breakaway opportunity but McLeod came up with the save. The Pioneers would capitalize on a turnover in the Sharks' defensive zone to take a 1-0 lead early in the second. Sacred Heart would have another one-on-one opportunity, but McLeod made a clutch save to keep it a one goal deficit. Matilda af Bjur had a takeaway in the Pioneers' defensive zone, but her shot was saved.

Molly Meyers connected with Bouveur, who tied the game one all on a power play early in the third. The Pioneers would regain the lead three minutes later, one they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.

The Sharks had an opportunity to tie the game once again with back-to-back shots, but the goaltender saved it right on the goal line before the puck went in. The Sharks did not give in and fought until the end. In the final two minutes, on a power play, Johnsson's shot was blocked and Lauren Spino's shot was saved. Paula Bergström had a shot right before the horn went off, but just missed wide.

McLeod finished the game with 20 saves. The Sharks finished with four blocked shots and for the second straight game killed all of Sacred Heart's power play opportunities.

af Bjur and Abby Latorella finished with a team-best five shots on goal. Bouvuer, Johnsson, and Julia Hoffmann all finished with three shots on target while Bergström, Linn Thomsen, and Carrigan Umpherville all had two shots. Meyers, Grace Dima, Erin Hinch and Spino all had one shot on goal.

The Sharks are back in action next weekend for another home and home series against Post. The first game in the weekend series, on Friday January 31, against the Eagles is at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton, Conn. Puck drop is slated for 3:00 p.m.
