FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Long Island University women's soccer team suffered a setback against Fairfield University Sunday afternoon, falling 4-0 at Lessing Field.
Sophomore
Emily Poole led LIU with three shots and one on goal while freshman
Hedda Einarsson finished with one shot on goal. Sophomore
Amanda Hjelle and sophomore
Kendra Oldroyd also had one shot each for the Sharks. In goal, freshman
Kayla DeTreux tallied seven saves, topping her six from the Sharks' win over Seton Hall University from Friday, September 6.
The Sharks had a fast start to the match, as Oldroyd sent a shot sailing just over the top of the cross bar in the fourth minute then Einarsson had a shot on goal of her own in the sixth minute.
DeTreux picked up where she left off on Friday night where she recorded a clean sheet in LIU's win over the Pirates. In the ninth minute Fairfield fired a shot from the left side of the top of the box that she successfully saved then followed with another shorty after in the 11
th minute where she jumped into the air and batted a ball away shot by a charging Fairfield player.
In the 25
th minute the Stags were able to sneak one past DeTreux then another in the 33
rd minute to give themselves a 2-0 in the late stages of the first half. DeTreux showed composure to save Fairfield's final shot of the half in the 36
th minute and the Sharks came to close to scoring a late goal, but Poole's shot went just high.
Fairfield had a shot in the second minute of the second half, but DeTreux continued to be solid in goal and recorded her fifth save of the match. In the 49
th minute, Poole beat a Fairfield defender down the right side of the field and fired a shot on goal that was tipped away by a diving Stag goalkeeper. Only one minute later Poole would shoot again, but miss wide.
In the 56
th minute DeTreux would take a long ball straight on the chest for another save, but the Stags managed to another goal in the 81
st minute to take a 3-0 lead.
Hjelle almost added a late goal for LIU in the 82
nd minute, but her shot was blocked by a Fairfield defender. Six minutes later the Stags would score their fourth goal of the match on a penalty kick, which saw the match end with a 4-0 final score.
