OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Despite contesting two overtime periods, a winner could not be determined and the match would end with a score of 1-1 when the Long Island University women's soccer team took on the New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday evening at President's Stadium.
Freshman
Tatiana Lizarraga scored the first goal of her college career and also led LIU in shots with three and shots on goal with two. Senior
Julia Duffy had two shots for LIU while senior
Gabrielle Clark and freshman
Maria Orozco each had one. In goal, freshman
Kayla DeTreux tallied eight saves.
Both the Sharks and Highlanders recorded eight corner kicks on the match.
It did not take long for the Sharks to take the lead as in the second minute Orozco launched the ball from the top right corner of the box; it would rebound off the left post to Lizarraga, who was standing directly in front of the goal, and she would rip the ball straight past the goalkeeper for the first goal of the match.
DeTreux also had a strong start to the match, making saves in the ninth and tenth minutes. She continued to prevent NJIT from scoring throughout the remainder of the half, making saves in the 32
nd and 38
th minutes and LIU would go into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
While Clark almost gave the Sharks a 2-0 lead in the 54
th minute, her shot missed left the Highlanders would add a goal of their own in the 56
th minute. Lizarraga came close to giving the Sharks the advantage again, but her shot in the 58
th minute was saved.
The second half continued to be a back-and-forth battle and despite shots from Borer in the 85
th minute and Duffy in the 87
th, the Sharks could not add another goal which forced the match to go into overtime.
While the Sharks could not muster a goal in the first overtime period, DeTreux delivered clutch work in goal as she made saves in the 92
nd and 97
th minutes.
Five minutes into the second overtime, Lizarraga would come close to sealing the victory for the Sharks but her shot missed just right. DeTreux continued her excellent play down the stretch, making saves in the 109
th and 110
th minutes. The match would end in a tie as neither side was able to find the back of the net.
