BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's rugby team will host Sacred Heart University in its home opener at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7 at Robert Blitz Field.
Notes on the Sharks
LIU opened its season on Saturday, August 31 against Brown University, falling 60-19 at Marvel Field. LIU had three different try scorers in sophomore
Calah Turpin along with freshmen
Haniyah Baugh and
Sara-Grace McCannon. Senior
Janine Gelles had an accurate day off the kicking tee, making 2-of-3 conversion attempts. Baugh and sophomore
Maqueisha Gillet also had runs over 20 meters for LIU.
Defensively, freshmen
Lynsey Danko made an impact with a team-high eight tackles. Gelles and Gillet both made seven while four different Sharks made five. Danko also led LIU with three steals at the tackle while Baugh, McCannon and freshman
Aliyah Corral each had one.
As a team, the Sharks won all six of their own scrums and 7-of-9 of their own lineouts.
Scouting Sacred Heart
The Pioneers are 0-1 on the season, suffering a 62-35 loss to Queens University on Saturday, August 31 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Isabel Cuddy led SHU with three tries while Kaitlin Lagase and Nia Williams both had one. Kaylee Hale successfully made five conversions.
Last season, Sacred Heart had a 5-4 record in 15s play and made it to the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Tier II Championships for the first time in program history. Sacred Heart welcomes eight newcomers to its squad of 30 for its 2019 campaign.
