WHIPPANY, N.J. – The Long Island University women's soccer team took down Seton Hall University 1-0 Friday evening at the Redbulls Training Facility in a match that saw freshman
Grace Cagnina score her first career goal and freshman goalkeeper
Kayla DeTreux record her first career shutout in only her second appearance.
"Great team win tonight from player one to player 30," said head coach
Eleri Earnshaw. "We played some quality soccer at times, battled for 90 minutes and ultimately were rewarded for our work in recent weeks with this result."
Along with Cagnina, who scored the first goal of her college career, the match also saw senior
Gabrielle Clark, sophomore
Emily Poole, sophomore
Sarah Borer and freshman
Maria Orozco record one shot each. As a team, the Sharks led the Pirates 6-1 in corners.
Defensively, DeTreux finished with six saves and the shutout while junior
Tiana Ono, sophomore
Mia Rose Daly and freshman
Sanna Vidstroem each all played 90 minutes and helped to keep Seton Hall scoreless.
DeTreux was stellar in goal all evening, saving Seton Hall's first shot on goal to the bottom left in the ninth minute then following with another in the 13
th minute after a Pirate shot to the bottom right.
LIU's offense created multiple scoring opportunities in the first half; Clark shot but missed out left in the 19
th minute then shortly after, with 21:39 on the clock, following another save by DeTreux, Einarsson missed high. Poole and Borer kept the pressure on SHU's defenders, each taking a shot in the 23
rd minute.
Orozco looked to give the Sharks the advantage with a shot of her own in the 36
th minute, but it missed just right. The Sharks persistence paid off in the 43
rd minute after Cagnina fired one past Seton Hall's goalkeeper and gave LIU a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime. She collected a loose ball off a corner and shot into the upper left corner over the outstretched arms of a diving Seton Hall goalkeeper to score the first goal of her college career.
The Pirates also struggled to put one past DeTreux and LIU's defense in the second half. She saved their first shot on goal of the period in the 69
th minute and another in the 80
th to record the shutout and help record the 1-0 victory for the Sharks.
