BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's soccer team set season-highs across the board as it defeated St. Francis College Brooklyn 3-2 Friday afternoon at Brooklyn Bridge Park in a Northeast Conference (NEC) matchup.
LIU's eight points, three goals, two assists, 14 shots and nine shots on goals were all season-bests.
Sophomore
Kendra Oldroyd led LIU with two goals while sophomore
Emily Poole scored and had an assist for the Sharks. Senior
Julia Duffy also recorded an assist. Oldroyd was a threat all afternoon, recording six shots and four shots on goal for LIU. Freshman goalkeeper
Kayla DeTreux finished with three saves.
The opening half saw strong defensive performances by both sides; Oldroyd sent a shot out left in the 10
th minute then in the 24
th minute Einarsson and Duffy both had shots saved by the Terriers' goalkeeper.
St. Francis recorded its first shot on goal in the 36
th minute, which was saved by DeTreux in the bottom center. Oldroyd would send another shot to the bottom center in the 43
rd minute, but it was saved and the score would be knotted 0-0 heading into halftime.
DeTreux continued her strong play in goal in the second half, making a save in the bottom right in the 47
th minute. Oldroyd would likewise shoot to the bottom right in the 52
nd minute then Tirado to the bottom left in the 54th, but both shots were saved.
In the 57
th minute the Sharks would take a 1-0 lead after Poole scored on a corner kick then shortly after Duffy found Oldroyd for LIU's second goal of the match. DeTreux would help keep the Terriers at Bay in the 69
th minute when she made a save to the bottom center.
The Sharks would take a 3-0 lead in the 81
st minute when Poole found Oldroyd for her second goal of the match. While St. Francis would add another two goals, LIU managed to hold on for the 3-2 triumph.
