Women’s Rugby Set for Clash With Mount St. Mary’s

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's rugby team will resume its season on Saturday, September 28 at 1 p.m. at Echo Field in Emmitsburg, Maryland, when it takes on Mount St. Mary's University.
 
Notes on the Sharks
LIU is currently 0-3 on the season, most recently falling 44-12 to Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday, September 14 on the East Campus Lower Turf on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Sophomore Maqueisha Gillet and freshman Haniyah Baugh scored for the Sharks while senior Janine Gelles completed 1-of-2 conversion attempts.
 
Gillet and Baugh lead LIU in tries as they each have two while sophomore Sydney Long, sophomore Calah Turpin and freshman Sara-Grace McCannon each have one. Senior Caitlin Johnstone also has one assist for the Sharks. Gillet's five runs over 20 meters lead the team while Baugh has two and junior Natalie Hickman has one. Gelles has also gone 5-for-7 on conversion attempts on the season.
 
Defensively, freshman Lynsey Danko leads the Sharks in tackles with 23, Gillet has 22 and Johnstone 19. Danko also leads LIU in steals at the tackle with four and Baugh is second with three.
 
Scouting Mount St. Mary's
The Mountaineers currently have a 2-1 record on the season, most recently falling 46-12 to Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday, September 21.
 
Both of the Mountaineers' other matches have played at Echo Field. Mount St. Mary's defeated Ursinus College 106-0 on Saturday, September 14 then American International College 19-17 on Saturday, September 7.
 
The Mountaineers' roster consists of 12 freshmen, 14 sophomores, three juniors, three seniors, and two graduate students. Head Coach Farrah Douglas returns for her third season after leading the Mountaineers to the NIRA Tier II Championship last year. The squad also welcomes back two NIRA Tier II All-Americans from the 2018 fall season. Jordan Butcher and Maya Grassi were named NIRA Tier II All-Americans while Julie Crochet was tabbed as NIRA Tier II All-American Honorable Mention.
