Women’s Soccer Drops NEC Opener to Fairleigh Dickinson

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Playing its first Northeast Conference (NEC) match of the season Wednesday afternoon, the Long Island University women's soccer fell 2-0 to Fairleigh Dickinson University at the LIU Soccer Park.

Despite the loss, the Sharks recorded a season-high 10 shots and tied their season-high in shots on goal with three. Sophomore Kendra Oldroyd led LIU with three shots while freshman Hedda Einarsson finished with two shots and one shot on goal. Sophomore Amanda Hjelle had one shot on goal and freshmen duo Maria Orozco and Neveah Rascon added one shot each. In goal, freshman Kayla DeTreux finished with four saves.

LIU had a strong start to the match as Oldroyd had a shot that missed wide left in the third minute. DeTreux was able to make her first save in the 19th minute then Einarsson would record her first shot of the match in the 26th minute, but it would also miss to the left.

In the 41st minute Oldroyd would miss left again then send a header just high of the crossbar in the 43rd minute, which meant the match went into halftime with a 0-0 scoreline. FDU got an early edge in the second half, scoring in the 47th and 48th minutes. DeTreux made a key save in the 56th minute to prevent FDU from expanding its lead then Sharks attempted to bounce back, with Poole missing high in the 64th minute then Duffy recording a shot on goal in the 65th minute.

Rascon almost scored the Sharks' first goal of the match in the 69th minute, but her shot missed to the left then Einarsson's shot in the 74th minute was saved. LIU would have two more scoring opportunities in the 81st and 82nd minutes, but Hjelle's shot was high, as was Orozco's header.

As neither the Sharks or the Knights would score in the final moments, the match ended with a final score of 2-0.
