EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The LIU women's golf team continued its strong start to its 2019-20 season on Thursday, Sept. 12 when it defeated Hofstra University by seven strokes (316-323) in a shootout event at the Red Course at Eisenhower Park.
The Sharks were led by sophomore
Julia Towne who took home medalist honors at the event with a three-over par 75, her lowest round since joining LIU this season. Following an opening bogey, Towne tallied nine-consecutive pars and followed up with a birdie on hole 12, a par-five. Towne closed out her closing nine with three-consecutive pars to earn the individual victory.
Classmate
Ashlee Garrett had another impressive showing for the Sharks, posting a six-over par 78. After two pars to begin her afternoon, Garrett birdied the par-five 3rd hole and par-four 4th to move to two-under par on her day. Despite struggling on hole six, Garrett tallied seven pars over her next 12 holes to finish two strokes off her career-low round. Freshman
Vera Arrebola Granes shaved six strokes off her previous low-round of the fall, firing an eight-over par 80 for LIU. The Spaniard posted 10 pars on her scorecard and made no worse than bogey on any hole.
Rounding out the team scoring for the Sharks was senior
Aida Gonzalez. Gonzalez birdied her opening hole and added a birdie on the par-three 5th hole, leading to a three-over par 39 on her outward nine. Despite recording just one par on the back-nine, Gonzalez fought her way to a round of 83 to lead the Sharks to the head-to-head victory.
Sophomore
Lexi DeLorimiere posted a round of 84 while competing as an individual. DeLorimiere carded 12 pars on her day, including six on the front and back nine. Senior
Claire Pohalski and freshman
Juliana De Leon also competed for LIU, posting rounds of 91 and 96, respectively. Pohalski birdied the par-four 7th hole to help card a four-over par on her outward nine, while De Leon posted three pars in her collegiate debut.
The Sharks continue the fall portion of their schedule in two weeks at the Hartford Hawks Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29 at Wintonbury Hills G.C.
