PHILADELPHIA – Despite ending the match with a season-high 13 shots to eight by its opponents, the Long Island University men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback against La Salle University Tuesday night at McCarthy Stadium.
Along with their 13-8 advantage in shots, the Sharks also had five corners to three by the Explorers.
Junior
Jonas Dovland tied the match-high in shots with three and also had one shot goal. Senior
Kyle Parish recorded two shots with one being on goal while freshman
Keanu Tuart, in the first start of his college career, along with freshman
Papa Ndoye each finished with three shots. Senior goalkeeper
Matias Pesallaccia had two saves.
Parish had an early shot for LIU, but sent the ball just high of the crossbar in the third minute. Dovland was a problem for La Salle throughout the first half, missing a shot right in the 26
th minute then shooting again three minutes later. While he ripped the ball to the bottom right, La Salle's goalkeeper was able to make the save.
Dovland had another shot in the 37
th minute, this time from the top of the box with his left foot. A La Salle defender was able to deflect it however, resulting in a LIU corner kick.
The Sharks' offensive onslaught continued in the 40
th minute when sophomore
Luke Kasulke launched the ball toward the goal from several steps out from the top of the box, but it would miss top right. While LIU had a corner in the 44
th minute, it could not muster a late goal and went into halftime with the score tied 0-0.
The second half began much like the first, with Parish taking an early shot. His shot in the seventh second went to the bottom center but was saved by the Explorers' goalkeeper. LIU kept the pressure on La Salle, with freshman
Ryan Grande firing a shot that missed high in the 53
rd minute for LIU's seventh shot of the match.
In the 57
th minute the Explorers would record their first shot on goal, but Pesallaccia was able to make the save in the bottom right. Shortly after, in the 61
st minute, La Salle was able to sneak one past him and take a 1-0 lead.
Tuart and Ndoye were dangerous late; Tuart sent a shot high in the 61
st minute then Ndoye missed left in the 70
th. Tuart would shoot and miss again, this time right, in the 75
th minute then Ndoye would miss consecutive shots in the 79
th and 83
rd minutes.
The Sharks were unable to add a late equalizer and the match would end with a 1-0 final score

The Sharks will have another road test on Saturday, September 14 when they face the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (1-3-0) at 7 p.m. at the Retriever Soccer Park.
